Design and stability analysis of an underground green marble quarry
Conducted a series of laboratory rock mechanics tests (e.g. uniaxial compression, Brazilian tests) for the mechanical characterization of the marble samples.
Characterization of marble samples
Conducted a series of laboratory rock mechanics tests (e.g. uniaxial compression, Brazilian tests) for the mechanical characterization of the marble samples.
Optimization of the blast design for tunnels (TBLAST)
Developed the TBLAST application, which automatically calculates the blast design for tunnels. TBLAST designs the drilling pattern, calculates the charge and delay for each blasthole and estimates the fragmentation.
Planning of underground exploitation of Granite and Volakas marble deposits
Developed a web application that: a) automatically collects the mechanical data of several stressmeters and extensometers installed at the quarry and b) processes the data to create dynamic charts and rock failure alerts.
Geophysical and geotechnical study of the Kisos location at Sfinari, Chania
Conducted a series of uniaxial/triaxial compression tests on rock specimens for the mechanical characterization of the in-situ rock formation.
Geomechanics and environment of CO₂ geological storage
Contributed to the development of a semi-coupled finite element–finite difference code for the stress-aided diffusion of CO₂ in geological formations.
Designing Safer Urban Spaces (DESURBS)
Developed the Strength of Materials Database (STREMA-DB): a secure web application combined with a relational database of building material properties. Also developed FC-MODEL, a MATLAB application for the calibration of typical and advanced failure criteria for rocks.
Technology Innovation in Underground Construction Structures (TUNCONSTRUCT)
Developed the Rock Mechanics Database (RMDB): a secure web application combined with a relational database of rock mechanics experimental data.
Development of an integrated method of simulation of the mechanical behaviour of underground marble quarries in discontinuous rocks
Developed a computer code for the automatic conversion of the excavation stages from CAD (.dxf) files into a format suitable for commercial discrete element codes.
Degradation and Instabilities in Geomaterials with Application to Hazard Mitigation (DIGA)
Conducted novel borehole breakout experiments at SINTEF, Trondheim, Norway.
Integrated Tool for In Situ Characterization of Effectiveness and Durability of Conservation Techniques in Historical Structures (DIAS)
Conducted a series of novel microdrilling experiments.
Effect of the Weathering on Stone Materials: Assessment of their Mechanical Durability (MCDUR)
Conducted a series of uniaxial compression and Brazilian indirect tension experiments.
Personal projects
Undergraduate Studies Guide generator
Designed and developed a Python application that automatically creates the Undergraduate Studies Guide of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering in MS Word format. The application populates MS Word templates with data on courses, instructors, committees etc., taken from an SQL database developed for this purpose.
This website
Designed and developed this website, originally with Django and now as a static Astro site.
Non-linear finite element code PFEM
Developed a 1D, 2D and 3D non-linear finite element code for static analysis. Force control, displacement control and advanced arc-length control loading methods are supported. Typical and advanced material models (with a focus on geomaterials) with hardening and/or softening have been implemented. The software works with the Gmsh pre-processor and the ParaView post-processor.
Rock mechanics testing tool RockMechsTest
Developed software that automatically combines the raw data from an MTS rock testing machine with the raw data from an acoustic emission logger. The code synchronizes the clocks of the two data loggers, processes the measurements and produces charts and typical results of rock mechanics testing (e.g. strength, elasticity etc.).
Kriging visualization code KrigView3D
Developed a code for the 3D visualization of Kriging results. The code supports volume slicing along the horizontal plane (top view) and two mutually perpendicular vertical planes.
Fluid flow tools FittingModel and Rheology
Developed two fluid flow codes. The FittingModel tool fits several rheological models (e.g. Herschel–Bulkley, Bingham, power law) to experimental data. The Rheology tool estimates the flow rate, the pressure drop and the pressure profile within a pipe or annulus based on the selected rheological model and parameters.
Rock fracturing analysis tool CrackFlow
Developed software for the analysis of fluid pressure, flow rate and stress distribution around general curvilinear fractures in rock. The method is based on Cauchy integrals, Kolosov–Muskhelishvili complex potentials and numerical integration.
Fluid flow analysis tool AnnularFlow
Developed software for the analysis of two-phase solid–liquid flow in a horizontal annulus during petroleum borehole drilling. The code estimates the thickness of the mud cake that forms under different rheological conditions.
Stress analysis code STRESS
Developed a MATLAB code for the calculation of the stress and displacement fields around arbitrary openings. The calculation is based on a conformal mapping technique developed specifically for this code and the Kolosov–Muskhelishvili complex potentials method.
